There's a ton of snow outside, and while in town, I decided it was a night for steak. At the butcher they had strip steak on sale, so i picked up two of them.
I really like Steak Au Poivre, and you can watch our how to cook steak au poivre recipe here. So I cooked up the steaks with some carrots simmered in water, butter, and cumin, plus some mashed potaotes.
Great meal and super simple to do, except the the Labradors hovering throughout the cooking process.

Steak Au Poivre is a good well tasting meal, especially with the potatoes you had. I might had increased the sauce quantity though, as we like gravy with our spuds!
Personally, It's hard for me to do a steak anywhere other than the grill. Depending on the time I have, I use both gas and charcoal.
A little Salt, a little pepper, a 'smokin Hot Grill, and away we go. Steaks on Presentation side down first and get some good grill marks. Then rotate about 90 degrees for the cross marked grill marks. Once those are seared in I watch for the blood to start pooling on the top which means it's time to flip.
On the back side, I get a good sear, and wait till it's done. You can't leave them at this point or they will burn! I use the touch method to tell when medium rare, but if visitors I will double check with an instant read thermometer.

I've been enjoying my new discovery of your podcasts. Your down to earth presentation makes me feel like you are a friend I haven't met yet. I love seeing your well behaved labs (Cesar Millan would be proud), too. Just one question...I thought I heard you say once that you were a vegetarian (chick pea burger episode?). So, now I am wondering if I heard wrong. I could have just re-watched that episode, but then I wouldn't have been able to tell you how much I look forward to more new episodes! By the way...I am seriously considering buying the Artisan Bread cookbook (after watching your performance of 'salt-less' artisan bread) the next time I am in the U.S. (I am an American expat in Turkey). Thanks again...and don't forget to answer my question...vegetarian or not?
