Mike,
Do vermicomposting (worms). I keep my homemade bin in the kitchen, and no there is no smell. I use the office paper shreds from work as the bedding, and three 10 gallon plastic totes from the blue store. The worms produce castings (poop), which is some of the richest nutrient compost possible, and is known as "Black Gold". They also produce "Worm Tea" which is a liquid form of the Black Gold.
