FEED the fish.... a good quality fish food (flake or pellets) whatever the fish will eat, try different types... the fish will let you know what they like... we feed most everyday during the summer, only once in awhile during winter. Sprinkle food on the water, watch the fish eat, when they stop going for the food, remove the leftover food and feed a little less next time. The rule we use is: “Whatever the fish will consume within 5 minutes.” IF you think they are still hungry, wait for 2 hours and feed a little bit more...
We grow different crops throughout the year... Summer is for heat loving plants, Winter is for cool loving plants. Since the roots are wet most of the time, you can even grow melons in the summer in Vermont! You could have a mono-culture if you wish, but it is best to have a diversity of veggies and flowers.
So “go for it!”... Don’t have a greenhouse? Build it in the great outdoors, and tear it down in the fall... If you don’t get cold weather (you live in the south; where it is warm all the time) cover this system with a shade canopy; and, don’t forget to shade the fish too.
We took an Aquaponics course taught by Charlie Johnson, in North Carolina, in 2005. Our Aquaponics’ building plans started from this FREE publication:: http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/Travis/Simplified-Manual.pdf
