I ran across this today, and there has been a lot of talk on our viewer forum about raising chickens.
Handcrafted Coops offers affordable, portable chicken coops for the backyard chicken farmer. All chicken coops are made with sustainable, renewable timber and come flat-packed for easy assembly. Our mission: A chicken coop in every backyard!
I can't keep chickens because I'm not home every night to take care of them, but I'm hoping some of my neighbors get some, I suggested some heirloom varieties.
I've seen all sorts of chicken coops, almost all of them hand made from various found materials. i like this coop because of its simplicity.

This is a good design for 2 or 3 hens, but no more. The only problem I have encountered is that predators can gain access from the bottom. Dogs, raccoons, and other predators will simply dig under the edge and have lunch. Wire can be secured to the bottom, but this causes problems for chickens in foraging and dust baths.

Friend of mine has one almost identical to this, and coyotes chewed the wire off and ate all but one of her chickens this week...that poor biddy lives with my hens now. She has a bit of post-traumatic stress disorder, but seems to be integrating well...anyway, the point is that these are not safe chicken houses in areas with particularly determined predators. But then again, my huge run was squashed by a bear this year...

I think this would be a good portable for using to enable the chickens to let them eat in our fenced yard without having them decimate out gardens.

Awesome ideas there, thanks. I actually took the plunge and got me some chickens last week! Now I have so many eggs like you wouldn't believe. You might like these egg recipes.
