• Cardboard Bikes, Plywood Boats, and Pork Chops GF Radio

Mike and Eric talk more about cycling, with Mike’s first group ride with a bunch of people older and healthier than he is. If you wnat to find a cycling group in your area, we suggest a web search for ‘cycling club’ in  your area. Keep in mind that we all start from somewhere, so go join a club and get riding. Then tell us about it.

We talk about the Cardboard Bike Mike read about, here is the link

We cannot overstate the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Bike helmets might look weird at first, but they can save your brain and your ears, the same ears that you use to listen to this fine program, GardenFork Radio.

Mike’s new recipe is for Pork Chops with Savory Apple / Carrot saute , getting his daughter to eat carrots, which is a rare event, we are told.

Plywood Boat Plans and how to build a plywood boat: Eric responds to questions people have asked about how to build a plywood boat, what kind of paint to use, how thick the plywood should be, etc.

Eric’s latest video, how to make a balsamic vinegar dressing, is discussed, Mike tries to poke fun but it doesn’t quite work, but that’s ok. Our goal is to get people to stop buying poorly made salad dressing and go make their own. The balsamic vinegar reduction hack video is here.

Loft bed plans – Eric posted photos and plans for a loft bed for kids, and mike has some suggestions. Eric then talks about why you should not use drywall screws when assembling this loft bed.

  • Simple Loft Bed Plans DIY

This is a loft bed a friend of mine made for his kid’s room. The bedroom is narrow, so building a loft bed with a desk underneath made the best use of a small space. You could use these plans for a loft bed in your tiny house plans as well.

The crossbeams that support the bed are tied into the studs in the walls of the bedroom. This is house is an old brownstone with sturdy wall studs, so no need to strengthen the supporting studs. The crossbeams are tied together with screws and corner brackets, the kind used for joist hangers, which you can buy at your local lumberyard. Don’t use drywall screws, use real wood screws, drywall screws won’t support the weight.

The platform is sized for a single bed mattress, two 2×6 studs along the width of the loft bed platform support the middle of a piece of 5/8″ plywood.

Where the cross beams connect to the wall studs, we connected the beams and then repaired the plaster and painted the room. We found a ladder on the street that worked well for getting up to the bed. You could also buy a wooden step ladder to get to the loft bed.

Have you built a loft bed, or have a plan for a loft bed? Let us know below:

  • Arduino Controllers, Pinball, & Burritos GF Radio

Mike and Eric talk about how to use arduino controllers in pinball and beehives, how easy it is  to use them and program them. Repairing a shower mixing valve without cutting a  hole in the wall, be sure to turn off the water before you replace the mixing valve cartridge. Eric did put in a new shower mixing valve at his parents house,  the video will be posted soon. Mike talks about being overwhelmed with success of a bootstrapped pinball project, and how what was once great is now a ball and chain. Eric tells of how one of his beehives swarmed and what he did to try to capture the beehive swarm. Lacking a tall ladder to retrieve the swarm  cluster, swarm traps are brought out. Did it work? listen and learn.

  • Inside the Hive: Views from a First Year Beekeeper (Scene 19)

After eight days in the wonderful state of Maine on a much needed vacation, I did a quick “hey howya doin’” on the hives this afternoon. As a first year beekeeper, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the best thing I can do for the hives is not rob them of honey so instead I’m feeding them a 1:1 sugar water to help them draw out comb and create strong first year hives. During today’s check on the hives my son and I added another super to each hive (they’d completely drawn out all the frames on the top super and filled most of it with honey) so they’d have something to do with their time. Idle mandibles are the devil’s workshop… or something like that.

It was hot and we’d already decided that today wasn’t the day to do a full hive inspection unless we saw something obviously bad when we opened the hives. Everything was humming along smoothly and the bees were calm so a quick look to see how the top frames were doing (fully drawn, mostly capped honey) and then we added our supers and refreshed their bug juice.

Buttoning up things, I noticed this odd little insect busy stealing some sugar water off the lid of the inverted mason jar and so did the honey bees. I’ve not yet identified it and first thought it might be a syrphid fly but it has a head more like a wasp. I’m going to check with my online bug guru buddy Debbie Hadley to see if she can identify it from my admittedly bad pictures.

Honeybees aren’t much for sharing and definitely didn’t like this little bugger anywhere near their hive. Within seconds there were a half dozen of them ganging up on it and they quickly dispatched with the intruder. This was the best shot I got of the attack and it is tough to see the prey. Two workers in the center had it locked up and a third had come in from above.

Bees may be vegetarians but they are fierce fighters and territorial creatures. On previous inspections I’ve seen them going at it with both bumble bees and horse flies that ventured near their hives.

Moral of the story – if you’re going to venture into a hive, bring along some friends or you’ll be sorely outnumbered.

    Enjoy,

    Matt

Matt (twitter @MattInTheGarden) is quite enamored with the low bush variety of blueberries. These smaller berries are  sweet and delicious. He loves to kayak and take pictures; neither of these things does he do particularly well. He thinks most people would benefit from having a canine companion. His favorite Brady was Marsha, of course.

  • Update: Podcasts & BlueTooth Stereo Headsets

    Jabra Street2

Speaking of listening to podcasts: back around the holidays I wrote about some stereo headsets for gardeners I thought were pretty kewl. Those were the Tags from Outdoor Technology. While the idea was good, I ended up having some problems with them.

First of all, I sweat like a Mississippi plow mule–it’s a family trait, what we kennerly’s do best–so I shorted out two pair of the OT Tags through the USB plug on the right earphone. The third pair (not counting the set that slipped from around my neck and drown themselves in the commode at a KFC one day), finally survived my sweat, but broke the thin wires to the left earphone and battery. I’ve since found that OT doesn’t sell them anymore, so there must have been other folks with problems.

So, I’m now using the Jabra Street2. So far, so good. The point of going Bluetooth, by the way, is getting rid of the wire between your belt holder and your ears while gardening or doing manual work, like fooling around with the bees (most BT stereo headsets also have a microphone and, because I have an iPhone I can tell Siri, “call Gayle’s mobile” while under the veil and have her bring me more smoker fuel or a box of frames or something).

The Street2s look like a military dog tag, even have the beaded dogtag chain. Any set of 3rd party earphones will plug into the side of the unit, but the set that comes with the Street2 are far better than any set of headphones I own. But if you break or lose your headphones, just plug some cheapies into the main body.

The usb charging port is on the bottom and, so far, has kept my salty sweat from soaking the electronics and shorting the unit out, even when worn inside my shirt. The BT radio is strong enough that I never have to take my iPhone from my belt holder and slip it into my pocket to get a good signal (a constant problem with the OT Tags). In fact, in the greenhouse I set the phone on top of a step ladder and then I can walk way over to the bee hives and still have a signal.

The Street2 will play for about 5.5 hours without a charge, will recharge from your computer or an included wall wart, comes with a belt/clothing clip as well as a beaded chain, and a pair of better than average earbuds.

The only downside is the microphone, which everyone review complains about. Anyway, around 60 bucks.

  • rhkennerly: Podcasts I Listen To

    Hi, Eric.

This is really more of a question for Rick.

Rick mentioned that he listens to a lot of podcasts. He is such an interesting guy and I’m always looking for new podcasts to listen to (I’m the one who spends a lot of time with my headphones while trainingfor marathons :)). I would love to get a peak at his playlist.

     Any chance he would share?

    Thanks,

    Cynthia

Aren’t you nice? Sure, I’m always glad to share. Eric & I have been talking about a podcast about podcasts, so thanks for getting us off dead center. Here’s my current master list from iTunes. I didn’t put in links to the shows because I don’t know what feed service you’re using. They shouldn’t be hard to find.

The first column was supposed to be a check box, but translated to a True/False entry in some versions. True means that I never skip that podcast.

    Some notes:

    • I’m not afraid of ideas, so I listen to all kinds of podcasts. The list is complete. Don’t judge.
    • I am a son of the enlightenment and a citizen of the world and so I don’t believe one country has all the good ideas, so there are many English language broadcasts from Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
    • I’m not a doctor, but I listen to a lot of summary podcasts intended for doctors. They’re not that hard to understand.
    • I love summary podcasts, “week in review” kinds of things. Other than the morning news from NPR, I don’t listen to up-to-the-minute news. Weekly summaries are better for overview, thoughtful reflection, fact checking, and balance.
    • I don’t listen to every podcast. After all, you can only listen to so many talks about “the Transit of Venus.” So I pick and choose.
    • There are links at the bottom of this page  for pdf, xls, & cvs versions that have more detail.
    • I listen at 2X on my iPhone. Apple has a method of striping out pauses so that the voices don’t sound “funny” when speeded up.

    Managing Podcasts

    1. My technique is to “refresh” my podcasts early in the morning in iTunes on my Mac. I have a Smart List called “latest” that gathers the last podcasts from the last download.
    2. I then copy those podcasts to a regular List called “today”
    3. I delete out all the podcasts in “today” that I listened to yesterday
    4. I place all the the podcasts less than 5 minutes at the top (60-earth, 60-second science, etc.)
    5. I glance over the titles and summaries for each podcast and then rearrange the ‘today” list by interest.
    6. I delete out the podcasts I’m not interested from the “today” list.
    7. the I sync up to my iPhone

(I limit “today” to 100 entries. So podcasts drop off the bottom of the list if I kinda want to hear them, but never get around to it. That way I never feel guilty about not hearing it and never fool myself that I’ll “get around to it”. )

  • Well Water Pump Repair! GF TV video

The electric pump that pumps water to our drip irrigation system broke down, so its time for some electric motor repair. This pump supplies water to our drip irrigation system for our vegetable garden. We use soaker hose watering system for the garden, you can watch our how to make a DIY drip irrigation system video here

But the pump broke. I think it got flooded with the heavy rains we had. GF Radio co-host Mike suggested replacing the capacitor, so we ordered one and we’ll see what happens in the video here.

What we’ve learned about drip irrigation:

Most vegetables and flowers do not have to be watered everyday. I found myself over-watering the plants when I first turned on the plant watering system. I know have the water timer set to turn on the water every 3 days and it runs for an hour. The plan is to water the soil well and then let it dry out between waterings. You don’t want wet soil all the time. If you notice moss growing in your vegetable beds, you are over watering your plants.

Several beds have plastic mulch over the soil, we put the soaker hoses under the plastic and it all works fine. Check out the links below for more drip irrigation videos and posts

  • Season Cast Iron How To with Gary House

This is the third of a series of articles about how to cook in a dutch oven, dutch oven recipes, and how to season cast iron and dutch ovens by Gary House, of Cooking-Outdoors.com. A big thank-you to Gary for contributing this.

The good news is that almost all new Dutch ovens come pre-seasoned direct from the factory. Today’s seasoning process at the factory is so good; you can use your new Dutch oven right out of the box (after washing) without going through the initial seasoning process. New Dutch ovens will still require continuous seasoning to build up the layers of protection.

Seasoning is the process of applying thin layers of grease or oil and baking until absorbed into the cast iron. This continuous process builds up layers of “carbonized” oils, protecting the surface from rust and giving you that desired non-stick coal black patina coating.

Vegetable oil, olive oil, bacon grease, Crisco, lard and premade seasonings are commonly used to season cast iron. I cannot tell you what one is best for you and everyone has their special grease or oil that they prefer; I will recommend you try grease instead of oil, as it is easier to see when you apply too much allowing you to remove the excess. Personally, I use Crisco these days and it works very well for me.

If you do have an un-seasoned Dutch oven or skillet and want to season it here are 8 simple steps to make that process easy:
    •    Wash with soap and water.
    •    Dry completely with heat, a towel will not remove enough moisture. Place cast iron in oven for a few minutes or in the sun if hot out until it is too hot to handle with your bare hands but easy to handle with heat pads. (Cast iron absorbs grease and oils best when warm so apply your seasoning to pre-heated cast iron that is warm to the touch, no need to burn yourself. Pre-heating opens up the cast iron pores to allow the seasoning to be absorbed.)
    •    Before applying seasoning, check for rust. Now is the time to remove it.
    •    Lightly grease inside and out, you do not want the oil to pool or build up anywhere while you are seasoning your oven. Lightly means enough to change the color of the cast iron; do not apply a heavy coating that feels sticky to the touch.
    •    Place your Dutch oven upside down with the lid laying flat on the grate into a BBQ that can maintain 375° F consistently for one hour. If you use your oven in the house you could get a lot of smoke in the kitchen, consider yourself warned.
    •    Bake for 1 hour at 375° F
    •    Turn heat off, open lid and let cool.
    •    Repeat two more times for best results.

Your Dutch oven is ready to use!

For bests result, apply a light coat of seasoning to your Dutch oven after every use. This builds up the layers of carbonized grease every time you do this, giving you layers of protection and non-stick surfacing.

There may come a time when you need to re-season your cast iron; perhaps it is getting a little rust, some bubbles have formed or the finish is chipping off. All caused from improper seasoning or care, but easily fixed.

    •    Place your Dutch oven or cast iron skillet in a self-cleaning oven.
    •    Turn and lock oven in the self-cleaning cycle.
    •    Run until cleaning cycle is complete. Your Dutch oven will be a light grey color when done.
    •    Let cool for a couple of hours
    •    Repeat steps 1 through 8 above.

I will leave you with my 6 Golden rules for storing your Dutch oven

    Rule #1
Never put away your Dutch oven dirty.
    Rule #2
Never put away your Dutch oven wet.
    Rule #3
Put a light coating of seasoning on your Dutch oven while it is warm from cleaning.
    Rule #4
Air circulation prevents a rancid Dutch oven; store with the lid off or ajar.
    Rule #5
Store your Dutch ovens in the house where the humidity is balanced.
    Rule #6
Rotate your Dutch ovens when selecting one for a meal. The one on the bottom in the corner is all dusty is going bad on you!

Next time we will discuss temperature control when cooking and I will have an easy bread recipe for you!

Part Three of our Dutch Oven Cooking Series by Gary House, creator of www.Cooking-Outdoors.com; an excellent source for all things about outdoor cooking, including Grill & Smoker reviews, recipes, and videos.

Gary is also the host of a new DVD, Taking Your Dutch Oven To The Max, using the dutch oven to smoke, grill, and even make ice cream.

Listen to Gary on this episode of GardenFork Radio talk about how to season cast iron, how to use a dutch oven, and dutch oven recipes.

  • NYFD in action

I was walking down the avenue to the hardware store when I saw the black plume of smoke and heard the fire engines coming. There was that burning tar smell of a roof on fire. Like half the neighborhood, I walked a few blocks closer to watch.

What stuck with me was the  orchestration of the FDNY’s response to the fire. Obviously, they practice for this all the time, but to watch it unfold is amazing.

The first engine on the scene has its crew out of the truck before it even stops. The driver hooks the pumper up to the fire hydrant and lines are run. Firemen are climbing up the back fire escape, others are inside the building getting people out. Two ladder trucks arrive and they are on their way to the roof.

Then the Rescue truck arrives and 4 guys pile out with their oxygen tanks and are immediately inside the building. Several chainsaws with roof cutting discs are with them.

The EMTs arrive and stand by with their fire gear on.

Then in a matter of minutes the black smoke turns white, and they have extinguished the fire. Its just one of those things that I find amazing.

  • Inside the Hive: Views from a First Year Beekeeper (Scene 18)

The last half of June and the first week of July 2012 have been HOT here in Virginia. I live in the Piedmont region and…

    Stop. Geography Time!

I’m doing the MC Hammer shuffle dance right now. It ain’t pretty, folks, but I try to imagine that it looks good. Humor me. I have almost no rhythm and I paid a fortune for these parachute pants.

    Ahem…

Virginia is broken up into five physiographic regions:

    1. Appalachian Plateau – way down in southwest Virginia. Factoid:  Virginia actually extends west of Detroit.
    2. Valley and Ridge – western part of the state. Beautiful and so different than heavily populated NoVA.
    3. Blue Ridge – picturesque and home to some great hiking and camping opportunities.
    4. Piedmont – rolling hills and some plateaus.
    5. Coastal Plain – typically we call that “Tidewater” around these parts. GF’s Rick lives in the Coastal Plain region.

As I was saying, I live in the Piedmont region and it comprises the largest area of the state. We’re west of the Tidewater and the fall line separates the two regions. It is higher than Tidewater and it is also HOT here in the summertime for man and beast alike. August can be brutal here. This year it’s been pretty hot since my kids got out of school. Anyhow…

So my lovely bride and I were out working on our garden fence (pictures soon) one evening and noticed that the bees were doing something interesting. This picture shows them doing something called “bearding” which is different from the bee bearding that some folks do where they get bees to hang all over their face. I don’t understand doing that at all, quite honestly. Hanging bees off one’s face is akin to sword swallowing, running with the bulls and juggling running chainsaws – they all fall into the same category entitled “Activities Which May End Badly”.

Bearding is something honeybees do when it is hot. It helps with ventilation in the hive and is a normal thing when it is hot. I use, as I’ve written before, a screened bottom board so that helps somewhat with ventilation. I do need to, however, vent the hives a bit at the top (you can do this by propping the outer cover open with a stick) when I’m home. I’ve also seen folks offset a honey super a bit to help let some of the heat escape. It isn’t absolutely critical but every bit helps.

I thought it was interesting that both hives were doing this and the patterns were similar. They definitely were making use of the landing boards (those slanted boars on the bottom) and stayed out there until well after 8:30PM. I don’t believe that bearding is any indication that there is a problem in the hive, just that it is hot.

Bees are quite good at regulating the temperature in the hive. They’ll flap their wings to help cool things off. If you are quiet and put your ear up to the back of the hive – it is quite safe back there – you can hear them inside, buzzing away and flapping their wings. I think that sound is cool. They also will bring water into the hive so I keep a large plastic pan filled with large rocks and water nearby to provide them with easy access to water if they need it. The rocks give them someplace to land without drowning in the water. They also weigh down the pan during windy times.

    Enjoy and stay cool!

A friend made these DIY Self Watering Plant Containers for his green roof, and I wanted to share them with you. He built a small deck on the roof of his building in Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY, and watches GardenFork to learn how to do stuff. neat.

These self watering planters are homemade, he stacked two 5 gallon buckets on top one another, cut a hole in the bottom of the upper bucket, slid a perforated pipe in there, and cut a slot in the side to fill up the water reservoir. I’m going to have to make a GF how-to video on how to make self watering containers.

Rooftop gardens need constant watering in the summer, the plants dry out in the hot sun quickly. In Brooklyn you add to that the breeze coming off New York Bay, and you get dessicated plant leaves quickly.

Vegetable plants that work well for rooftop gardens are ones that do well in the summer heat. Peppers are great, lettuce not so great. Squash, especially winter squash, do well, and because their vines sprawl all over a roof, they also create a cooling effect for the roof, shading it with the large squash plant leaves.

Herbs like basil, sage, rosemary – those from the Mediterranean – are good for rooftops.

We’ve done a how-to video on making a drip irrigation system for a rooftop garden here. The drip irrigation system uses soaker hoses, its an inexpensive way to water your rooftop garden. Here is another soaker hose drip irrigation video we made for our vegetable garden.

  • Energy Saving Lights in the Food Store

I rarely go to large grocery stores, between the local food coop, and our locally owned grocery store, I avoid them.

But this week I had to go to the DMV, and afterward I wandered around the shopping mall nearby. I went into the large store that sells all sorts of stuff, including a large food section, and I noticed that the lights in a bunch of the food coolers and freezers were off. I thought that someone needed to replace those bulbs soon.

Then the lights in the coolers near me started to turn on. I looked closer at the coolers and realized each one had motion sensors. Neat.

The retail world is big on lighting products just so, especially food, to make it look great. I found it interesting and a big turnaround for the grocery business to turn off the lights on some of its products.

A couple of things in my head right now:

What kind of lights are used in the motion sensor equipped coolers? Turning lights on and off many times a day can reduce the life of a bulb, and it takes energy to turn on a light. So I’m wondering how the cooler designers figured out that tradeoff.

And I’m curious how the energy savings works out. It must work, or this large store would not be doing it.

I see so many office buildings with the lights on late at night, and most of them are empty, though some of them are now equipped with motion sensor lights, now we see it in the grocery store.

  • Inside the Hive: Views from a First Year Beekeeper (Scene 17)

Having the right tool for the job makes all the difference. You can try to drive a nail into the wall with your shoe to hang that picture and it might work but even a crappy dollar store hammer will make that job a cinch because the hammer is specifically designed to accomplish that task. Those Top-Siders… well, not so much.

Tools for beekeeping are no different and today I want to introduce the hive tool to you. There are a few different types and I’ve got two of them. The one I’m not talking about in this post is flat with a 90 degree bend on one end. Both ends narrow down and can be used for prying or scraping. I like it. I’ll talk about it in the future.

But in this photo you can see my other hive tool – the J-hook style hive tool in action. It has a flat end that tapers to a narrow blade and this is also useful for prying apart hive bodies, particularly when they are stuck together due to propolis. Visible in the picture is the J-hook end that is great for lifting up one end of a frame in order to grab hold of it. This is quite helpful when removing the first frame in the box because there isn’t a lot of room anyway and adding a bunch of bees to the mix only makes it that much more difficult to get a good grip on the frame. Those (as GardenFork’s own Rick would call them) “bugs in a box” seem to have a keen sense for being exactly where I need to put my fingers. Not wanting to crush any bees (or get stung in the process), I just use the tool to carefully move the frame into a position where I can more easily grab it.

There are a few other tools that are useful when inspecting a hive. I’ll write about those in the future.

    Enjoy,

    Matt

Matt (twitter @MattInTheGarden) can be found most summer weekends mowing grass. He’s nonplussed about trimming the ditch along his farm’s road frontage. He stinks at throwing a baseball and really isn’t particularly skilled at throwing objects in general. Matt likes his steaks grilled medium and never uses steak sauce.

  • Surfcasting with Lures How-to GF TV Video

Surfcasting, saltwater fishing from shore, is easy to do, and a great way to learn how to catch fish. In this how-to video we use lures at the beach to fish for striped bass and bluefish. Ocean fishing like this is not complicated, and i’m all about simple is good.

We went surfcasting at Fort Tilden Park, on the border of Queens & Brooklyn in New York City; its pretty wild to be in the city, yet on the ocean, weird dichotomy there between the urban business and the calm of the ocean surf.

A couple of things I learned about ocean fishing on this trip:

    • Bring along water friendly shoes like those sandles with big holes in them, or don’t wear shoes at all if its warm enough
    • Apply sunblock, the bigger the SPF number the better. Even if its cloudy, you should protect your skin.
    • Make sure you have the proper permits and are allowed to be fishing where you are fishing. I’m big on following the rules, that’s why they are there.
    • Pay attention to bag limits and eating limits. Around NYC, the fish have accumulated some chemicals in their flesh that you don’t want to eat large amounts of.
    • Buy used surfcasting gear on craigslist, our suggestion is 10- 12′ lightweight rod and spinning reel. I used braided line for the first time in this video and it worked well.

We’ll do more fishing videos in the near future, i’m all about eating food that is locally harvested. What are your surfcasting tips? Let us know below:

  • Inside the Hive: Views from a First Year Beekeeper (Scene 16)

When folks talk about beehives – average, non-beekeeping folks, that is – they’ll probably mention honey, honey comb, the queen bee, maybe pollen. Those are things most folks would know. Today I want to talk about something that few folk outside the beekeeper community would know about – propolis.

In this image you can see what look like dirty peanut butter along the edge of the hive body. This is a resinous substance known as propolis. It is produced by the bees from the plant resins and sap. It is a sticky, gooey mess when it is warm and I am told it is hard and brittle when cold. The color will vary a bit based on what plants the bees use to produce the propolis.

Bees use propolis in the hive to do a few things:  fill in small cracks, seal up anything they think needs to be sealed, coat anything they cannot remove from the hive (such as a dead mouse). Personally I’ve not seen bees do the latter (yet) but I’ve certainly seen them seal up gaps.

Hives bodies (the boxes holding frames of comb) are challenging enough to handle when they are full – they get heavy quickly. Propolis adds to the challenge by sticking them together, making it harder to separate hive bodies so you can lift them. I had to really work hard to get the hive body above this one in the picture off and found my hive tool worked pretty well to gain some leverage and pop it apart.

Propolis, I’m told, is quite effective at hermetically sealing nasty stuff in the hive (such as that dead mouse) so that it doesn’t foul up the hive. It apparently has some antimicrobial and anti-fungal qualities depending upon what plants resins are used. I’ve witnessed that honeybees are pretty clean creatures and act in a very methodical way to maintain order. If I ever have an opportunity to capture them coating something (other than the cracks of the hive) with propolis, I’ll be sure to snap a picture.

There are folks who use propolis for medicinal reasons. I’m told you can find it in heath food stores and that claims are made as to its efficacy in the treatment or prevention of this or that. I don’t have any personal experience here so I can’t really say. I’d probably want to see some scientific evidence of this before plunking down any cash on this. I’m not sure that there is even any requirement to prove its efficacy before selling it. And if there’s (potentially considerable) variability in its makeup, it might be difficult to know if that propolis you’re buying is going to do you any good. Again, I’ve got no experience here but I’d be reluctant to shell out too many of my greenbacks on a substance that might not be regulated and may not provide any real benefit. I simply don’t know enough about this to definitively come down on one side or the other. Caveat emptor.

Beekeepers wanting to collect propolis (and potentially make some cash by selling it) can put a screen in the hive – these are available from the various beekeeping supply companies – and the bees will coat the holes with propolis. Personally, I’d rather that they make honey but who knows… I might try this in the future.

    Enjoy,

    Matt

He is tired of replacing rotted wood in his raised bed gardens and wants to move to brick ones. First, he’ll need to get some mad mason skillz(TM) to accomplish that task.

  • Inside the Hive: Views from a First Year Beekeeper (Scene 15)

The bees in hive #2 (the hive formerly known as “the nuc hive”) have been very productive. Three weeks ago we put a medium super with new foundation atop this hive and when we checked it on Father’s Day, we found not only drawn comb but drawn comb filled with nectar in the process of being turned into honey. All ten frames were drawn and most of them were full of nectar or were in the process of being capped so we put another super on this hive to provide them more room.

In this image you can see a sample of what I mean. The bees are very busy working to create honey. This is accomplished via enzymes within the bees which break down the complex sugars into simpler sugars. This is called inversion. Then the water content is reduced by the bees via fanning. Once it has reached the proper moisture content, it is capped by the bees.

I personally find bees amazing. There are so many aspects of their lives which make me wonder, not the least of which is how do these bees know when to cap the honey. I suspect it is passed down through their genes but still… it is fascinating that they create a substance which has an insanely long shelf life. Cool huh?

    One other thing.

A medium super of honey is pretty heavy. I can completely understand why some folks opt for the 8-frame mediums vice the 10-frame ones.

And don’t get me started about the weight of a deep hive body full of brood and bees. But that’s a topic for another time.

    Enjoy,

    Matt
