Best Homemade Tomato Cages – GF Video

These are the best homemade tomato cages I have made. They hold up every year, and are easy to put away, and they don’t break like those cheap tomato cages. Watch the video to see how to make tomato cages my way.

How to make the Best Homemade Tomato Cages

I use concrete reinforcing wire to make tomato cages. These come 9′ long, and we will cut them down. There are two gauges of wire avail for concrete mesh, buy the thinner kind if  there is a choice.

watch tomato videos 2Lay down the wire on the ground, and cut the mesh in to pieces as shown in the video. Be sure to wear eye and ear protection if you are using a power tool. You can also use bolt cutters to cut the wire.

I bend the end wires over the adjoining piece of wire mesh, you could also use wire or cable ties to connect them. If you use wire, you could dis-assemble the best homemade tomato cages for storage. Wear gloves when working with the mesh or wire, it saves your hands from cutting cut and being stained with rust from the metal.

To keep the cages upright, I weave a 1×2 stake through the mesh once or twice. Drive the stake in and the cage wont go anywhere. If you are using raised beds (video to build them here) screw the stake into the side of the bed, works great for stability.

An alternative is to buy a roll of concrete mesh. You can cut off a length of it and tie it together. My issue with this is that the roll of mesh isn’t very wide, so you get a short tomato cage, and most tomatoes do well in a tall cage, I think.

I find these cages work really well for cherry tomatoes. Those stalks grow all over the place and tend to get taller than most other tomatoes, and these cages are up to the challenge. I like taller plants because my dogs will eat the cherry tomatoes off the vine at their level, so tall plants are necessary!

How to save tomato seeds – GF Video

Learn how to save tomato seeds from tomatoes in your garden. Watch our video, its super easy to do. Tomato seed saving works best with heirloom and non-hyrid tomatoes. Seeds saved from hyrbrid tomatoes will not yield the same tomato variety.

Save Tomato Seeds For Next Season

Simple right? Its not hard to save tomato seeds . The key thing to remember is to not use any of the seeds that are still floating in the tomato water after 3-4 days. These saved seeds will not germinate, as they still have that gelatinous membrane around them. There will be plenty of seeds at the bottom of your tomato seed container to dry for next year’s crop.

Remember to dry the seeds on plain copy paper,  not  paper towels. The saved seeds will stick to the paper towels, they stick less to the regular paper. It helps greatly to write on the paper what kid of tomato the seeds are saved from. Learn from my experience…

I keep all my seeds in the fridge or in a cool dry dark place in the basement. Save those silica gel packs from electronics packages, and put them in with the seeds, they absorb moisture from the stored seeds. You can also buy silica gel at a crafts store. Are there other methods for absorbing moisture in the seed packets? Let us know below.

Here’s how one GF viewer saves tomato seeds:

I save those but I keep them in a different fashion. If I find a tomato I like (heirloom, hopefully) I take a color photo of it before I cut the tomato. I then proceed to save the seed. I dry them on a plate myself. Once dried for a few days I make a small wax paper envelope, put the seed in and then staple it to the photo. If there’s some quality about the tomato I write that and the name, if I know the name, onto the photo. That’s my system for saving.

You might also consider doing a seed exchange with your friends, its a neat way to discover local specialty seeds. Or this could be the start of a new hobby of cross breeding tomatoes to create new varieties that work best in your micro climate. Neat stuff all round. Simple Paper Seed Pots : GF Video

Learn how to make simple paper seed pots, the best paper seed pots, I think. These paper pots are for those of us who can’t make origami paper plant pots, OK? Simple method to make paper pots for your seedlings and seed starting trays. If you want to make a pack of paper pots, just glue or tape them together, use what you got.

Most newspapers print their paper with soy based inks now, so I’m ok with using regular newspaper for vegetable paper pots. And the newspaper will break down in the garden soil; you just open up the bottom of your paper pots just before planting to allow the roots to easily grow out the bottom of the paper pot.

You can use different size jars to make different size newspaper pots. I used a peanut butter jar to make paper pots for tomato seedlings, and used a small mason jar for lettuce transplant paper pots.

simple-paper-seed-pots-pinIts best to bunch the paper pots together under grow lights, as the paper can wick away moisture from the seed staring soil, packing the pots close together cuts down on that evaporation. You can watch our how to build a simple grow light video here, and our other seed starting videos here.

Easy Cherry Tomato Recipe served over pasta, rice, or quinoa. Here’s a recipe for all those ripe cherry tomatoes in your garden. Roast the tomatoes with some garlic and the like, and its amazing.

My friend Bill gave me this cherry tomato recipe; he’s been making it a few times a week. Its a great midweek dinner, or weekday dinner recipe, super simple.

I make this with all yellow tomatoes, but you can ‘ use what you got ‘ cause that’s the GardenFork way, after all. The yellow cherry tomatoes have  lower acid content, and are sweeter, I think, than red cherry tomatoes, but that’s just my opinion.

If you have a recipe for cherry tomatoes, please share it with us below, be great to hear from you.

Tomato cage how to video : GF Video

This DIY home-made tomato cage works and last for years. Learn how to make tomato cages by watching our DIY video on how to build tomato cages. The tomato cages sold in garden stores don’t work for me. The cages are too short and flimsy, and don’t hold up your tomato plants. stop buying the cheap tomato cages in the store and start making your own tomato cages here.

There are two main kinds of tomato plants: determinate and indeterminate.

    how-to-make-tomato-cages-2Determinate plants are compact.

Indeterminate tomato plants are wild and all over the place.

I think the two words can be applied to plants and people’s personalities. Determinate people know where they are going in life, indeterminate people go all over the place. I think indeterminate plants produce more tomatoes, your opinion on that.

Tomato cages like these work for both kinds of tomatoes, but are especially good for indeterminate plants. The cages help contain their crazy nature of wanting to grow all over the place. The large squares of the kind of cage material use, concrete reinforcing wire, allow you to get your hands into the cage to harvest tomatoes. I’ve seen people build cages with other kinds of wire mesh, and you can’t get your hands inside the tomato cage to grab the fruit.

This is a great recipe for all those cherry tomatoes you have at the end of the season. This dish is sort of a cherry tomato salad over pasta. I don’t think this dish needs cheese, but if you do, go ahead.

    Cherry Tomato Pasta Recipe

3 pints of cherry tomatoes ( about 4 good handfuls )

    Red Wine Vinegar

    Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1 handful of Fresh Garden Herbs: oregano, chives, thyme, rosemary

1 lb spaghetti or other pasta shape you like. I use the thin spaghetti

Put the water on the stove to boil, go out to the garden and pick tomatoes.

Add pasta to pot and cook to taste.

While pasta is cooking, slice all the tomatoes in half, place in a bowl.

Chop the fresh herbs, add to tomatoes.

Add about 3 tablespoons of olive oil to the bowl

Add about 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar

with your hand, mix the dressing into the tomatoes, and squish some of the tomatoes at the same time, so their juices come out and mingle with the oil and vinegar. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Put colander into a serving bowl, place in sink. When pasta is cooked, pour pasta into colander. [ the hot water will warm the serving bowl as it drains ]

Remove colander and drain hot water from serving bowl. Put pasta in the serving bowl and pour tomatoes over pasta.

  • Tomato Hornworms – how to get rid of them – GF Video

Tomato Hornworms – how to get rid of them – GF Video

Tomato Hornworms can ruin your tomato plants overnight. Here’s how to get rid of tomato hornworms. If you notice the leaves of your tomato plant have been chewed to the stalk, and it looks like the plant has been stripped of it’s leaves, you have a tomato hornworm infestation.

Nothing like coming up to the house to find large portions of your tomato plants stripped of their leaves. This is what happened to us, so we made a video about the tomato hornworms who took over our tomato patch.

The Tomato Hornworm is the caterpillar of the Five Spotted Hawk Moth, a relatively non-descript moth, but in its caterpillar stage wreaks havoc on tomatoes.

In the video I talk about the eggs of the parastic wasp, then I realized later the white protrusions from the caterpillar are the cocoons of the braconid wasp, not its eggs, which is even better, as soon they will hatch and parasitize more Hornworms. If you want the whole insect story, check out the Tomato Hornworm page at Wikipedia.
    tomato-hornworm-2

I have heard about cardboard collars one can put around a young tomato plant to prevent the Hornworms from crawling up the stem. Another way, according to Wikipedia, to reduce the resident population is to roto-till the garden, as this will destroy hornworm pupae in the soil.

If you see a wild sounding moth-bug think flying chaotically around your garden, it could be the adult moth of the tomato hornworm. I have only seen the moth a few times, but its huge and looks like a crazy bug thing.
